cousins

My cousins Autumn and Dan were in DC today. They came for a family reunion (Dan's side) in the Outer Banks but were able to hang out with me this morning. We went to Eastern Market in DC for breakfast and a little shopping. Autumn decided that she needed to be a better accessorizer and so was hunting for necklaces. I got caught up in the hunt and ended up with the necklace above. It is a half inch square, small enough to not be a scary but different enough from my norm (which is a bare neck) to make me a little uncomfortable. Interestingly enough Autumn, who instigated the search, ended up with nothing.

A highlight of the morning was going to the craziest used book store, Capitol Hill Books. It is a firefighters worst nightmare. Floor to ceiling books. Books crammed in every nook and cranny. Books in the sink. Books in the closets. Books in the basement, bathroom and kitchen. Towers of books lining the narrow stairway forcing you to pivot your hips and walk slightly sideways up the stairs. The fire load in that rowhouse is amazing. I always get slightly nervous imaging that place lit up. Firstly, it would be blistering hot. Secondly, crawling around in full turnout gear and SCBA trying to navigate in the smoke through the maze of shelves and stacks of books, towers falling on you at every turn. So scary. But I digress from my nightmare. (And do not worry Mom, it is like 45 miles away from my work; I will never ever have to go in there should it catch on fire.) The other cool thing about this store is the little comments taped and tucked everywhere. One book has a paper sticking out of it that reads "Lies, lies and more lies. But read it anyway." Obviously the owner is democrat because the note rubber-banded to Ann Coulter's book reads "Her adam's apple was airbrushed out." It is hilarious place. I love it. And I loved spending time with my cousins and sharing a little piece of my town with them.

Glad you had a good time with them Cam, and glad you added that message about the bookstore NOT being in your district - how did you know what I was thinking as I read your blog??? LOL Love Mom
