adopt-a-family party

Our team this year had a 9 yo boy and 12 yo girl. With $60 for each of them we were able to get some awesome stuff. (Scott, Ashley, Steph and Me)

So for the fourth year in a row my friends and I have had the best Christmas party ever. Instead of buying gifts for each other, we get together for a party. To the party we each bring a side dish for dinner and $20. We gather the money, eat all the yummy food, and the head out in teams to go Christmas shopping for the kids of families we adopted. It is so much fun going through Target trying to decide the best gifts to buy these kids. After about an hour, we meet back up and share the spoils with eachother. We love going through and seeing all the fun toys that we were able to get for the kids. It truly encompasses all that is great about Christmas: food, friends (who are as close to family as it gets around here), gifts and giving. It is by far my favorite event here in Virginia.

Another great thing is that the families that we "adopt" are all from the city I work for. It is really cool to be able to do this service for "my" community, a place where I have been into some of these struggling homes and know that the need is really there because I have seen it. I am really grateful that we are able to support them year after year.

Stats: 25 people + some money from friends that couldn't come but wanted to donate = $600 to spend on the 9 kids (from 5 single-parent families) for Christmas. It was awesome!
