Newborn Bryce and Uncle David (01/08).
Today I did clinical hours in Labor and Delivery. Here is what I got out of it:
a) Childbirth is disgusting. It is just not right. When I create a world, your belly-button is going to dilate and there will be no straining/pushing/ripping/tearing/cutting nor any bloody/stool-stained fluid gushing out at the end. Simply lift the baby out of the clean non-smelly amniotic fluid in the uterine cavity (it will be in front of the abdominal cavity), clamp and cut the cord. Once the body senses that the inside of the cord has been exposed to air the belly button will slowly constrict and close. The placenta/cord will remain in the uterine cavity and be reabsorbed by the body for nutrients. No complications.
b) Childbirth is painful. Watching those women strain to try and get a baby's head to round a tight corner and come up out of where it is supposed to... super ouch. I salute you mothers out there for the sacrifice you have made by pushing those huge noggins through your lady parts, and suffering the aftermath down there, to bring a life into this world. I think I will pass on that one.
c) Childbirth is long. All the inductions came in at 6:30am and our first baby was not born until 3:32pm and that is with Pitocin.
d) Epidurals are not so scary. Way not as barbaric as I had before imagined. Sign me up for one of those.
e) Babies are so cute. I am glad Erika* is having Ella part deux on Monday. I cannot wait to meet her and hold the tiny newborn. (*I would say "Jon and Erika" because I realize the kid is both of theirs, but Erika is doing the hard work so she gets the credit here.)

I agree with just about everything. Disgusting-definately. That's why I opt out of the mirror-gross! Long-too long. The painful part doesn't really come until AFTER the disgusting part is over...unless you opt out of the epidural, I would never voluntarily opt out of that magical thing. Those little alien-like babies are the most adorable. They are just the most precious things on the planet. It truly is a miracle!
Chris says "I agree". Nough said!
Amen to everything. After Will was born I was all for adoption! (I've re-thought things and am more willing now). Epidurals are wonderful. And nobody ever told me about the after things that happen at home. Uck. But I would go through it again for the perfect little baby straight from heaven, just perfect little things. And luckily mine didn't look like and alien :)
