I made this. The boys said it was delicious. Dave, the birthday boy, ate almost 1/5th of the cake. It was impressive. And flattering. I must be a great cook! ...or I must be able to follow a recipe. Hmmm... It was fresh whip cream and homemade cherry compote sandwiched in-between four layers of dark chocolate cake and garnished with chocolate curls on top. While I don't prefer cherries in their cooked form, it wasn't half bad. I might want to try it with strawberries in-between. That might be delicious.
I would like to give a shout out to my Mom for buying me the awesome cake pans. Without which I never would have been able to make more than a dozen beautiful cakes and gain a dozen extra pounds. Kidding about that second one. Seriously. I love the cake pans, they have brought joy to many. Thanks Mom!

Wow! What a cake. I have little cooking skills so I'm going to ask the question. What in the heck is a compote? Why would they name it compote, it sounds like something that should be in cement or garden stuff? That being said, the cake does look delicious! Love the chocolate curls-how did you do that?
I'm just passing on the tradition - my mom bought me all of the cake pans and equipment I needed to make the first of many, many cakes! Love you Mom
Kari, You're going to love this. I did not know what to call the cherry stuff but the word compote popped into my head. I was unsure what compote meant so I looked it up - it meant cherry stuff. Cool, but why did I know that? A picture of the IHOP menu flashed through my head. They have various fruit compote as an option to put on top of your "fruit" topped pancakes. So my vocabulary is not a matter of cooking skills, it is because I frequent IHOP. Gheeto, I know.
And to get the chocolate curls I took a potato peeler to a hershey bar. Just make sure to get king size or mini bars because they are thicker. The regular one breaks and falls apart from the pressure.
It DOES look good. I think sometime we need to get together and make a cake! :)
Looks delicious! I love tracking your cake adventures through your blog- you're quite the aspiring pastry chef!;)
