
Today my Dad was stopping through the neighborhood on the way to PA for a business trip. I decided to try a new Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipe from Smitten Kitchen because my Dad's favorite cookie is Oatmeal Raisin Chocolate Chip Cookies. Since we are adults now I decided to get fancy and add walnuts as SK suggested.
As I was at the store perusing nuts I had the choice of getting a large bag labeled "Walnuts" which would leave me leftovers that I didn't need or a small perfectly sized bag of "Black Walnuts". I chose the latter; they were both walnuts right? After I had made the cookies I took the first bite. Delicious. I would highly recommend this recipe. Then I took a second bite and a strong flavor overwhelmed my mouth - bizzaro walnuts. It was overpowering. To me it totally ruined the cookie.
I met my Dad for dinner and gave him the cookies, warning him about the bizzaro walnut. He took a bite and smiled. Apparently his Mom used to make black walnut cookies when he was a kid. So he was expecting that strong flavor and it filled him with nostalgia. Kind of neat. Until he told me that he was actually allergic to walnuts. WHAT?!?!
How did I not know this? Apparently he does not go into anaphylactic shock, but his lips start to swell a little and is mouth starts tingling after one or two. I tried to take the cookies away but he insisted that he would be fine; said he had a pocket knife and a straw with him incase he needed to self-trech. Glad you have a contingency plan Dad.

(just add chocolate chips and it will be perfect).

So, the only time I've had black walnuts were in black walnut ice cream...which I LOVE!!! My mom used to buy it a lot. But, from the sounds of it, they don't do good in cookies. Note to self. I'll have to try that recipe sometime...OH, and I love how your dad was so sweet and ate your cookies, knowing full well his lips would get all fat. Good thing he had that plan in place...
LOL Cam! Dad did mention your great cookies, they were his lunch today! Black walnuts are really good in some things, englich walnuts are what you are use to. A good tidbit to know eh?
PS he did say they were THE BEST he's ever had!
